“There are over a thousand free-flying butterflies in a lush tropical enclosure, airside, free, open around the clock. It takes fifteen minutes and completely resets your headspace between flights.”
Changi layover: your extraordinary airport stopover
The world's best airport has a lot more going on than you think
If you’ve got time to kill at Changi, good news: you really don’t. This is not an airport where you stare at the departure board, buy an overpriced snack and count down the minutes. A Singapore Changi Airport stopover can genuinely feel like part of the holiday, whether you’ve only got a couple of hours or enough time to stretch it into a mini adventure. Changi is built for exactly that, with gardens, lounges, a rooftop pool and Jewel right next door.
Our Singapore House of Travel specialist shares how to make the most of your layover, depending on how long you’ve got.
Got 2 hours? Stay airside. It’s still worth it
Sunflower garden and Orchid-inspired garden spaces
Fresh air, runway views and zero effort required
Need a reset between flights? Head for the Sunflower Garden in Terminal 2, which is open 24 hours, it's free, and gives you runway views and a proper breath of fresh air. If gardens are your thing, Terminal 2’s Enchanted Garden is another easy wander that feels a long way from the gate. Both give you a proper reset between flights without going anywhere near the departure gate.
Free cinema and gaming zone
Because staring at the departure board is nobody's idea of a good time
If you want to switch off, Singapore Changi Airport makes that easy. Terminal 3 runs a free 24/7 movie theatre, and Terminal 4 has a free Entertainment Corner with arcade-style games. No other airport on earth does this. It's a genuinely good way to spend an hour or dead time than circling duty free for the third time.
Premium lounge access
Shower, eat, sit somewhere calm. Your HOT consultant can sort this
A long-haul connection feels completely different when you've had a proper meal and a shower. Lounge access turns a rushed stopover into something a lot more civilised. Talk to your House of Travel consultant that can help sort the right option for your trip and your airline.
Rooftop pool, Terminal 1
Yes. An airport pool. With runaway views.
The rooftop pool at Aerotel in Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1 comes with runway views, a jacuzzi, showers and towels, which makes it one of the best Changi Airport layover upgrades if you have time to spare. Go before 8am and you'll practically have it to yourself. It's one of the most underrated upgrades on any long-haul journey through Singapore.
Got 4 to 5 hours? Head to Jewel
Jewel Changi Airport sits just outside the terminals and changes what a layover starts to feel less like transit and more like an outing. It's a glass-domed complex built around the world's tallest indoor waterfall, with gardens, dining, attractions and rooftop park. Give yourself at least three to four hours to do it justice. One important practical note: Jewel is landside, which means you'll need to clear immigration to get there. If you have a few solid hours, this is the sweet spot and make sure you've got enough buffer to get back to your gate.
HSBC Rain Vortex
40 metres of waterfall inside an airport. Nothing prepares you for it.
The Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, plunging through the middle of Jewel over seven storeys and it's free to stand beneath. Come back at 8pm or 9pm for the light and sound show. Even if you’ve seen the photos, it’s completely worth it.
Shiseido Forest Valley
900 trees inside a glass dome. Genuinely
Wrapped around the Vortex, this lush indoor forest is all winding paths, cool air and greenery. It's the kind of place you wander into for ten minutes and come out of an hour later. It is ideal when you want to stretch your legs without making your stopover feel like hard work. Free to explore, accessible from every level.
Canopy Bridge
Glass floor, fog at both ends, views straight down onto the Vortex
If you don’t mind heights, this gives you a bird’s-eye view across Jewel and straight onto the Vortex. Twenty-three metres above the forest floor with a glass centre section. It is short, sharp and very good for photos.
Canopy Park
Sky nets, mazes, slides and panoramic airport views. Adults love it too.
Up on level 5, Canopy Park, a, 14,000sqm rooftop playground with Sky Nets you can bounce and walk across, a Mirror Maze, Hedge Maze and Discovery Slides is a fun one if you’re travelling with kids or just want something playful. There are garden trails, slides, misty spaces and a few reasons to stay longer than you planned. It's ticketed, so your House of Travel Consultant can pre-book your slot and skip the queue.
Changi Experience Studio
Interactive, hands-on and genuinely good for families
Twenty interactive hands-on zones telling the story of how Changi became the world's best airport. If you want more than shops and snacks. It adds a bit of energy to the stop and works especially well for families. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.
Jewel dining
280 options. From hawker food to proper sit-down meals.
This is where you can do your layover properly. The basement food court has some of the most authentic Singapore hawker food you'll find anywhere, at a friction of restaurant prices before your next flight. There's also Tim Ho Wan dim sum, a Don Don Donki Japenese food hall, and Singapore's only remaining A&W if that's you thing. It is easily one of the handiest parts of any Jewel Changi Airport guide.
“If your connection doesn't allow time to exit immigration, you can catch a glimpse of the Rain Vortex from the Skytrain connecting Terminals 2 and 3 - it passes through Jewel and slows down as it goes through.”
Got 6 hours or more? Make it a mini Singapore day.
Free Singapore Tour
A real city experience, included with your transit
If your transit lines up, this is one of the best-kept secrets on a Singapore Changi Airport layover.in long-haul travel. Changi’s Free Singapore Tour is available to transit and transfer passengers only, can be pre-booked up to 50 days ahead, and you need to report at least 90 minutes before your flight departs from the tour booth. Current tour options include a City Sight Tour, which passes landmarks such as Merlion Park and Gardens by the Bay, plus other themed routes. Tours run for about 2.5 hours, so you need a decent buffer, but it’s a brilliant way to turn a long stop into a quick taste of the city.
Airport hotel day room
Rest properly. Your House of Travel consultant can book this as part of your itinerary.
If you’d rather rest than roam, book a transit hotel or day room. That gives you a shower, a lie-down and a proper pause between long-haul flights, which can make all the difference on the second leg. Singapore Changi Airport has transit hotel options. Your House of Travel consultant can help arrange as part of your trip so it's all sorted before you land.
Early check-in and bag drop at Jewel
The airport hack almost no one uses
This is one of the best airport hacks. If you’re flying with a participating airline, you may be able to check in early and drop your bags at Jewel's Level 2 check-in lounge before exploring, which means you can enjoy Jewel or a city tour without hauling your luggage around.
“Kampong Glam is worth adding if you have time - colourful street art, the Sultan Mosque and some of the best food in the city.”
