Indian Pacific Rail Journey: What to know before you go

Indian Pacific Rail Broken Hill NSW © Journey Beyond

Step aboard the legendary Indian Pacific and experience the golden age of train travel — reimagined in five-star style. This iconic rail journey with Journey Beyond takes you from coast to coast across Australia’s vast and mesmerising landscapes, spoiling you with gourmet meals, fine wines and front-row views of the outback.

The Indian Pacific’s story began on 17 October 1917, when two construction teams met in the middle, forging a link between east and west across the longest straight stretch of track in the country. Over a century later, it’s still one of the world’s great rail adventures — a journey where the history is just as captivating as the destination.

There’s never been a better time to slow down, settle in, and let the rhythm of the rails carry you across a continent.

1. What’s the Indian Pacific route?

Spanning an epic 4,352km, the Indian Pacific is Australia’s longest rail journey — stretching from Sydney on the east coast to Perth on the west, or vice versa. Whether you’re starting your adventure with the sun rising over the Blue Mountains or finishing with the wild beauty of the Indian Ocean, this four-day, three-night experience is the ultimate coast-to-coast crossing.

Along the way, you’ll roll through Adelaide, cross the vast and haunting Nullarbor Plain (home to the longest straight stretch of railway on Earth), and pass landscapes peppered with gum trees, goldfields, ghost towns and grape vines. It’s a journey that’s as rich in history as it is in scenery — and every bit as memorable as the destination itself.

2. What will I see?

From rainforest to red dirt, this is a journey of shifting landscapes and unforgettable contrasts. As you glide across the longest stretch of straight railway track in the world, you’ll watch Australia’s heart unfold — one breathtaking scene at a time.

Think lush green hills and misty valleys, followed by arid plains scattered with rusted tin sheds and outposts with just a handful of residents. You’ll roll past golden coastlines whipped by sea spray, meander through leafy gorges and creek-carved countryside, then vanish into the wide, empty beauty of the Nullarbor.

Every day brings something different — and every window tells a new story.

3. How fast does the train travel?

The train averages 85km/hour, which might sound slow, but once you’re chugging along the rail track, you’ll find it’s the perfect pace to absorb every view.

4. Do I sleep on-board the train?

You sure do — and you’ll sleep well. All guests stay on board the Indian Pacific, with cabins that are compact by nature but cleverly designed and undeniably comfortable. Expect five-star hotel-quality linen, thoughtful touches throughout, and for Gold Service guests, a well-stocked kitchenette just down the hall, open 24/7 for those late-night cravings.

  • Gold Service Twin Cabins transform from a cosy three-seater lounge by day into bunk-style beds by night, complete with a private ensuite and a large picture window so you won’t miss a moment of the view.

  • Gold Service Single Cabins are perfect for solo travellers, featuring a single bed that becomes a seat during the day, with shared bathroom facilities at the end of the carriage.

  • Gold Service Premium Cabins offer extra space and style — with a three-quarter double bed, an additional fold-down single, and a private lounge with an armchair and table. A great option for couples or travellers after a little more room to unwind.

  • Platinum Cabins are the cream of the crop — double the size of Gold Twins, with spacious ensuite bathrooms, deluxe double or twin beds, and panoramic 1.5-metre-wide windows for next-level views from bed.

Wherever you’re tucked in, you’re guaranteed a peaceful night rocked gently by the rhythm of the rails.

5. What are the on-board facilities?

Step into the lounge car — the beating heart of the train and your go-to for good chats, live music, and a cheeky glass of wine (or two). Scattered throughout the train’s 35 carriages, you’ll find elegantly appointed lounges with plush couches, vintage-style tables, bookshelves and games corners that give off serious old-world charm.

This is where friendships are made over a quiz night, where you can sip your way through a wine tasting, or simply kick back to the sounds of live music performed daily. There’s a staffed bar on hand and snacks and drinks available all day — so whether you’re toasting the sunset or sneaking in a late-night nibble, you’re well looked after.

6. Where will I be dining?

Every day on the Indian Pacific begins deliciously — especially for Gold class passengers, who start with a hot cooked breakfast in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. This beautifully restored dining car is full of charm, with leather booths, cut-glass accents and crisp white linen creating that classic railway elegance.

Platinum guests enjoy their meals in the Platinum Club, an exclusive space with a relaxed lounge vibe and fine dining flair.

No matter where you’re seated, food and drinks are all included — from gourmet meals to sparkling and still wine, craft beers and premium spirits, served throughout the day. And it’s not just about what’s on board. On select days, you’ll step off the train to enjoy unforgettable dinners at handpicked restaurants, vineyards and farms, sampling local flavours right where they’re grown.

7. What will I be eating?

Think five-star dining — just on rails. On board the Indian Pacific, every meal is an experience in itself. The all-inclusive menu, crafted by talented on-board chefs, celebrates fresh, seasonal Australian produce and changes regularly to reflect the regions you’re travelling through.

You might be treated to saltwater barramundi, grilled kangaroo fillet, or a melt-in-your-mouth lamb dish — all paired perfectly with a handpicked selection of premium Australian wines. It’s a true taste of the country, served with style and set to ever-changing views outside your window.

8. Will the cuisine be stand-out?

Absolutely — the Indian Pacific is a journey for your taste buds as much as your eyes. The on-board dining experience is constantly praised for its creativity, quality and celebration of Australia’s finest regional produce.

Expect a medley of flavours — from native ingredients like kangaroo, saltbush and wild rosella flower, to local heroes like South Australian lamb, prime beef, and creamy Margaret River cheeses. The wine list is equally impressive, featuring drops from the Hunter Valley, Barossa, and Adelaide Hills, to name just a few.

It’s all fully inclusive, and if you’re travelling in Platinum Service, things get even more indulgent — think Champagne Bollinger on arrival, Bracegirdle’s artisan chocolates, and a perfectly poured nightcap at turndown.

Every dish tells a story. Every glass raises a toast to the journey.

9. What tours are available?

One of the best parts of the Indian Pacific journey? You don’t just watch Australia go by — you get out and explore it.

Depending on which direction you’re travelling, you’ll step off the train for immersive off-train adventures, all seamlessly woven into the experience and included in your fare. You’ll travel in comfort on luxury coaches, with a curated menu of tours at each destination.

  • Sydney to Perth: Explore the artistic frontier town of Broken Hill, soak up the culture and cuisine of Adelaide, and experience the vast, surreal beauty of the Nullarbor Plain — including the chance to dine beneath a starlit outback sky.

  • Perth to Sydney: Stop in Kalgoorlie, delve deeper into the Nullarbor, sip your way through the Barossa Valley, uncover Broken Hill’s creative side (yes, including a town tour led by local Drag Queen sensation Shelita Buffet), and finish with jaw-dropping views in the Blue Mountains.

From ghost towns to gourmet tastings, desert art to drag queens, every excursion is designed to help you connect with Australia’s landscapes, locals and stories — with just the right balance of fun, flavour and freedom.

10. What should I pack?

Think smart casual with a touch of comfort. For both Gold and Platinum Service, neat casual attire is perfect for on-board dining — no formalwear required, but leave the jandals for the beach.

Bring a warm layer for cooler evenings, especially if you're stepping off the train for outdoor experiences. A comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential for excursions, along with a sunhat, sunscreen and sunglasses to keep you protected under that Aussie sun.

You’ll find a hairdryer and travel-sized amenities in your cabin, so no need to overpack. It’s also handy to carry some cash, as there are no ATMs on board. For onboard purchases or tour upgrades, EFTPOS and credit cards are happily accepted.

Just remember — this is a journey of comfort and style, so pack what makes you feel relaxed and ready for adventure.

11. What’s the luggage limit?

The Journey Beyond website recommends the following:

Platinum Service Twin and Double Cabins: One piece of hand luggage plus a garment bag and/or briefcase per person.

Gold Service Twin Cabin: One piece of hand luggage plus a garment bag, cabin bag or briefcase per person.

Gold Service Single Cabin: One piece of hand luggage plus a garment bag, cabin bag (105cm linear measurement) or briefcase.

For all classes the cabin bag can measure 105cm (linear measurement) with a maximum 10kg weight. Your main luggage is checked in and you won’t see it or be able to access it until you arrive, so it's a good idea to pack a cabin bag. You can check in 2 x 30kg bags.

12. When should I book?

As early as possible. Cabins sell out very fast. To make sure you don’t miss out, register your details with your House of Travel consultant, and they’ll let you know when your preferred travel dates open for sale. Departures to Dec 2025 are now open.
