Travel Requirements
What are the new UK entry rules for dual citizens from February 2026?
UK entry requirements may affect you if you hold dual citizenship (for example, British or Irish as well as New Zealand).
From 25 February 2026, the UK will introduce new rules for its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system:
- British and Irish citizens cannot use an ETA to enter the UK.
- You must travel on a valid British or Irish passport, or a passport with a UK Certificate of Entitlement confirming your right of abode.
- If you currently use your New Zealand passport to enter the UK and also hold British or Irish citizenship, this will no longer be accepted after this date.
What does this mean for you?
- Check your passport now. If you do not have a valid British or Irish passport, apply for one as soon as possible.
- Avoid relying on a Certificate of Entitlement unless necessary – it can be costly and time-consuming.
These changes are part of the UK’s move to strengthen digital border controls. Most visa-free travellers will need an ETA, but British and Irish citizens are exempt and must show the correct passport instead.
