Experience Cherry Blossom Season in Japan

A Japan holiday at its most magical.

Cherry blossoms in Japan

Experience bliss, tranquility and the scent of sakura.

There’s no better time to plan a Japan holiday than during the iconic cherry blossom season - when the entire country softens into shades of blush pink and white, and the arrival of spring is celebrated in the most beautiful way imaginable.

For many Kiwi travellers, seeing cherry blossoms in Japan is a true bucket list experience. It’s fleeting, magical and deeply cultural. If you’ve been wondering about the best time to visit Japan, this is it.

What makes cherry blossom season so special?

Known locally as sakura, Japan’s cherry blossoms symbolise renewal, beauty and the fleeting nature of life. Every year, typically between late March and early April, the blossoms sweep north across the country, transforming everything from busy city streets to peaceful temple grounds. The air feels softer, the pace slows slightly and the atmosphere is peaceful. Petals drift gently through the air, gathering along rivers, pathways and parks, creating postcard-perfect scenes at every turn.

For travellers, it’s one of the most sought-after travel experiences in Asia, and a highlight of any Japan holiday itinerary.

Where to see cherry blossoms in Japan.

One of the best parts of a Japan cherry blossom holiday is the variety of locations you can experience them. Each city offers a slightly different feel, from modern skylines to centuries-old shrines framed by delicate blooms.

Tokyo

Japan’s vibrant capital offers an incredible introduction to cherry blossom season. Head to spots like Ueno Park or along the Meguro River, where lantern-lit trees create a dreamy atmosphere in the evenings.

Kyoto

If you’re after something more traditional, Kyoto is hard to beat. Ancient temples, wooden teahouses and historic streets become even more enchanting when surrounded by blossoms. It’s a must for travellers looking for that classic Japan feel.

Osaka

Lively and full of energy, Osaka blends food, culture and cherry blossoms beautifully. Parks like Osaka Castle are particularly popular during sakura season.

Beyond the Cities

If you have more time, venture further afield to places like Hiroshima, Hakone or Mount Fuji for even more scenic views - often with fewer crowds.

Experience Hanami - Japan’s cherry blossom tradition.

Cherry blossom season in Japan is more than just sightseeing - it’s a deeply rooted cultural celebration.

Locals take part in Hanami, or “flower viewing,” gathering with friends, family and colleagues in parks to enjoy food, drinks and good company beneath the blossoms.

You’ll see:

  • Picnic blankets spread under blooming trees
  • Groups sharing seasonal food and sake
  • Evening yozakura (night blossom viewing) with trees illuminated by soft lights

For visitors, joining in this tradition is one of the most authentic ways to experience Japanese culture during your trip.

Seasonal experiences you won’t want to miss.

During cherry blossom season, Japan embraces all things sakura, and it shows up in the most delightful ways.

Across the country, you’ll find:

  • Sakura-themed desserts and sweets in cafes and bakeries
  • Limited-edition drinks, including pink lattes and seasonal cocktails
  • Boutique shops filled with cherry blossom-inspired gifts and souvenirs
  • Festivals and markets celebrating the arrival of spring

It’s these small details that elevate a Japan holiday during cherry blossom season from beautiful to truly immersive.

Travel -it broadens our views, creates lasting memories and allows you to take a break from your ordinary.

During my career, I have hit some ultimate highs- being the only New Zealand finalist in the prestigious Avis Travel Scholarship in 2019, winning the CLIA Rising Star award in 2020, being a finalist for the House of Travel Rookie of the Year in 2020 (not awarded to anyone due to COVID), multiple internal sales awards and of course getting to see some amazing countries through travel adventures.

In recent years, I have taken to much more off the beaten track travel, exploring Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and China and a epic three-week safari through Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa.

Although I did sneak in a wee three-week coach trip in Europe as well-we all need some creature comforts!

I have loved travelling with my family and seeing my teenage girls' minds blown by the experiences they have in different countries- different ways of living, different foods, different cultures, amazing sites (and sights!) and really seeing what is important to other people outside of NZ.

I now work from home but venture into the office regularly to see clients (by appointment only). I do love a good face to face catch up!

I would love to hear what adventures you have planned, whether close to home or somewhere in the weird and wonderful, and love helping pull things together to give you your Best Holiday Ever. Give me a call or send me an email to get started on your journey. I look forward to meeting you!
